Retro wall art borrows from a specific run of the twentieth century: the geometry of Art Deco, the optimism of 1950s advertising, the flat colour of 1960s pop and the loud shapes of the 1980s. These retro art prints take those languages and make something new with them, rather than copying an old poster.

What makes a print read as retro

Three things, mostly. Limited colour - retro artwork tends to work in four or five flat tones rather than photographic gradients, a habit inherited from screen printing. Confident shape - circles, arcs and hard diagonals doing the work that detail would do in a modern illustration. And type that belongs to its era, whether that is a fat Deco serif or a rounded seventies sans.

The eras still read differently on a wall. Deco and mid-century pieces feel composed and quite formal, so they suit a hallway or a dining room. Pop and psychedelic work carries more energy and holds a big blank wall in a living room or a studio. Eighties Memphis shapes are the boldest of the lot and want a plain background to sit against.

Where retro wall decor works best

Retro prints are happiest against calm surroundings. A single strong piece on a plain wall does more than three fighting for attention, and the colour will usually pick up something you already own - a chair, a rug, a book spine. If your room is already busy, choose the quieter end of the collection: a geometric composition in two or three colours rather than a full psychedelic swirl.

In a kitchen or a bar corner, vintage-inspired prints of drinks, coffee and food do a particular job: they read as decoration rather than as art you are meant to study. In a living room, a larger retro poster works better than a small one - the flat shapes need scale to land.
