Teal Living Room Ideas
Teal gives a living room depth and personality, and it looks its best when you pair it with a warm contrast such as burnt orange, mustard or tan leather. Keep the floor and ceiling light, add warm wood and brass, and let the art bring the two colours together.
Below: colours that work with teal, teal and grey schemes, ideas for sofas, rugs and the TV wall, and how to choose art for teal walls.

The colour palette
Colours that work with teal in a living room
- Burnt orange and rust are the complementary colours for teal. An orange sofa or armchair against a teal wall is a confident, mid-century look.
- Mustard and ochre give a softer warm contrast in cushions and throws.
- Blush and coral make teal feel lighter and more playful.
- Cream and warm white on the ceiling, woodwork and rug stop teal from closing in.
- Walnut, teak and brass suit teal walls especially well.
For proportions, use the 60-30-10 rule: about 60% teal or cream, 30% wood and a soft neutral, and 10% orange, mustard or blush.
Teal and grey, and choosing your undertone
A teal and grey living room is calmer than teal with orange. It works best when the grey matches the teal's undertone. Blue-leaning teals such as peacock suit cool, pale greys, chrome and white. Green-leaning teals such as deep jade suit warm greys, stone, oak and brass.
Charcoal is a good middle ground. A charcoal sofa or rug with teal walls looks modern, and one mustard cushion or a print with gold in it keeps it from feeling cold.
Sofas, rugs and the TV wall
- Teal walls: tan or cognac leather, burnt orange velvet, cream boucle and mustard all stand out against teal.
- Teal sofa: against warm white walls, a teal velvet sofa gives you the colour in one piece. Add rust and blush cushions.
- Rug: a cream or neutral rug with a simple pattern lifts the floor; a rug with rust and teal in it ties everything together.
- TV wall: dark teal helps a black screen blend in. Hang a pair of prints either side rather than one above, so the screen is not the only focal point.
Wall art for a teal living room
On teal walls, art with light or warm backgrounds stands out best. Prints with pink, orange, mustard or gold pick up the warm accents in the room. Japanese-style landscapes, bold animal prints, folk designs and music posters all suit a teal living room. On white walls with a teal sofa, choose a print with plenty of teal to link them.
Above the sofa, aim for art about two thirds of the sofa's width and hang it 15 to 25 cm above the back, with the centre around 145 to 150 cm from the floor.
