Gallery Wall Above the Sofa

For a gallery wall above a sofa, keep the whole arrangement about two thirds the width of the sofa, start 15 to 25 cm above the sofa back, and leave even 5 to 8 cm gaps between frames. Build around one larger anchor print and balance smaller ones either side.

Below is a ready-matched set of five prints from one series, in black, sand and ochre, with sizes and a layout you can copy.

How to hang it

  1. Lay it out on the floor first. Arrange the prints in front of the sofa until the spacing looks right, then measure.
  2. Hang the anchor first. Centre the A2 above the middle of the sofa, with its centre at about 145 to 150 cm from the floor.
  3. Work outwards. Stack two A4 prints on each side, keeping every gap the same, about 5 cm. Two stacked A4 prints come out almost exactly as tall as the A2, so the edges line up.
  4. Check the edges. The outer frames should finish inside the ends of the sofa.

Paper templates taped to the wall help a lot. Cut them to each print size and try the layout before you drill.

Common gallery wall mistakes

  • Hanging too high, so the art floats away from the sofa.
  • Uneven gaps. Equal spacing matters more than identical frames.
  • Too many tiny prints. One larger anchor gives the eye a place to start.
  • No common thread. Pick prints from one series, or repeat one or two colours across the set, as this one does with black, sand and ochre.

Questions people ask

How high should a gallery wall be above a sofa?
Leave 15 to 25 cm between the back of the sofa and the bottom of the lowest frame, and keep the centre of the whole arrangement at around 145 to 150 cm from the floor.
What size prints work for a gallery wall above a sofa?
One A2 anchor with A3 or A4 prints around it works above most sofas. Keep the total width to about two thirds of the sofa.
How far apart should frames be on a gallery wall?
5 to 8 cm is the usual gap. The exact number matters less than keeping every gap the same.
Do frames on a gallery wall need to match?
No, but matching frames give a calmer look. If you mix frames, keep the art connected by colour.
What is the best layout for a gallery wall?
A central anchor with smaller prints balanced either side is the easiest to get right. Grids suit very symmetrical rooms; mixed salon walls suit eclectic ones.
Are gallery walls still in style?
Yes. Relaxed gallery walls with a mix of sizes and a shared colour palette remain one of the most popular ways to decorate above a sofa.
