Navy Bedroom Ideas
Navy makes a bedroom feel snug and tailored. It works best when you pair it with crisp white or warm cream and one warm accent such as mustard, brass or blush, and give the art a light background so it stands out from the dark wall.
Below: colours that go with navy, warm and cool navies, bedding and headboards, and how to choose art for navy walls.

The colour palette
Colours that complement navy
- Crisp white and cream are the classic partners. White feels sharp and nautical; cream feels softer.
- Mustard and ochre are the boldest match, because yellow-orange sits opposite blue on the colour wheel.
- Antique brass and gold glow against navy in lamps, frames and handles.
- Blush and dusty pink soften navy and make it feel romantic.
- Walnut and tan leather bring warmth without adding more colour.
Use the 60-30-10 rule as a guide: around 60% navy, 30% white, cream or wood, 10% mustard, brass or blush. Read more on our decorating rules page.
Warm navy or cool navy?
Like most dark blue bedroom colours, navy comes in warm and cool versions. Some navies have a hint of green or grey and feel soft and slightly vintage. They pair well with cream, oak and mustard. Others lean towards violet or pure ink and feel crisp and formal; they suit white, chrome and grey. In a north-facing bedroom, a greener, warmer navy stays cosy rather than cold.
Navy on all four walls makes a small bedroom feel enclosed in a good way. If that feels like too much, paint just the wall behind the bed and keep the others in a warm white.
Bedding and headboards for a navy bedroom
White or cream bedding gives the strongest, freshest contrast against navy. For something cosier, layer oatmeal linen with a mustard or rust throw and a navy cushion or two. Avoid all-navy bedding against navy walls, which can make the bed disappear.
A walnut or tan leather headboard looks rich against navy. An upholstered headboard in mustard, blush or soft grey velvet makes a softer statement.
Art for navy walls
On navy, art with a light, cream or warm background reads best: coastal scenes, sunlit landscapes, botanicals with ochre flowers, or abstracts in mustard, blush and white. Gold or oak frames help the art stand out; a thin white mount adds definition.
Above the bed, go for one A1 above a double, or a pair of A2 prints above a king size, hung 15 to 25 cm above the headboard. Browse our navy blue wall art collection, or add warmth with yellow and mustard prints.
