Posters that suit a dorm room

  • Music. Gig-style and album-inspired posters are a classic for a reason. See our music posters.
  • Cities and travel. Your home town, a city you love or the trip you are saving for. Browse our city posters.
  • Typography and positive words. A bold phrase above the desk helps through long revision sessions.
  • Retro and graphic art. Strong colour and simple shapes read well in a small space.
  • Sport. A favourite game, from tennis to basketball, in a clean graphic style.

The full teen and student wall art collection has plenty more, and works just as well for a teenage bedroom at home.

Decorating dorm walls without damaging them

Most halls and rented rooms do not allow nails or screws, so check the rules first. Then choose one of these:

  • Removable adhesive strips and hooks. Use ones rated for more than the weight of the poster and frame, and press them on firmly for the time the pack recommends.
  • Poster hangers. Wooden or magnetic rails clip to the top and bottom of an unframed poster and hang from a single removable hook.
  • Lightweight frames with acrylic. Much lighter than glass, so they are easier to hold up with adhesive strips, and safer if one falls.
  • Lean, do not hang. A large poster leaning on a desk, shelf or chest of drawers needs no fixings at all.
  • A picture ledge or shelf, if you are allowed one, lets you rotate posters whenever you like.

Avoid sticky putty and ordinary tape on the back of a print. Both can mark the wall and damage the paper.

How many posters, and how to make the room cosy

In a small room, one statement poster plus two to four smaller ones is usually enough. Leave some wall clear so the room does not feel cramped. For a tidy look, hang a grid of four matching A3 posters with even 5 to 8 cm gaps. For something more relaxed, group an odd number of mixed sizes around one larger anchor.

To make a dorm feel cosy, repeat two or three colours across your posters, bedding and cushions, add warm light from a lamp, and bring in a plant and a few photos. Not sure what suits you? The Art Match quiz suggests prints in about a minute.
