TV Wall Decor Ideas

The easiest way to decorate a TV wall is to treat the screen as one piece in a group. Hang a matching pair of prints either side of it, or build a gallery wall around it, and choose art with some dark tones so the black screen blends in rather than looking like a hole in the wall.

Below: four layouts that work around a TV, how to make the screen less dominant, spacing and sizes, and prints that suit a media wall.

Four ways to style the wall around a TV

  • A pair either side. Two prints of the same size, one on each side of the screen, give a calm, symmetrical TV wall. Portrait A2 or A1 prints work for most screens. Line up the centres of the prints with the centre of the screen.
  • A gallery wall around the screen. Treat the TV as the anchor and arrange smaller A3 and A4 prints around it, keeping every gap the same. This hides the screen best, because it becomes one dark shape among many.
  • One print to one side. If the TV sits off-centre on its unit, balance it with a single larger print on the other side, hung at the same centre height.
  • Art above the TV. Only if there is real space. A low, landscape print or a short row of small prints above a TV on a stand can work, but a wall-mounted screen usually leaves too little room.

How to make the TV blend in

A black screen on a pale wall is the strongest shape in the room, so give it company. Black frames, prints with black or charcoal in them, and black and white art all repeat the dark rectangle so it stops standing out. Our black and white prints are an easy match for any screen.

Painting the TV wall a deeper colour, such as navy, forest green or charcoal, helps too. On a dark wall, choose prints with lighter areas so they do not disappear.

Watch for reflections. Our prints are made on matte paper, which does not add glare, but glass in a frame opposite a window can. Non-reflective glazing is worth it on a TV wall.

Spacing and sizes around a TV

Keep the gap between the TV and the nearest print about the same as the gaps between the prints themselves, usually 5 to 8 cm, or a little more if the screen is large. Equal spacing is what makes the TV look like part of the arrangement.

If the screen sits on a media unit, leave 15 to 25 cm between the top of the unit and the bottom of the art. The whole group, TV included, should be no wider than the unit beneath it, or about two thirds of the width of the wall if the TV is mounted with nothing below.

Questions people ask

How do I decorate the wall around my TV?
Hang a matching pair of prints either side of the screen, or build a gallery wall around it with the TV as the anchor. Keep the gaps equal so the screen reads as part of the group.
Should you hang art above a TV?
Only if there is plenty of space. A low landscape print can work above a TV on a stand, but above a wall-mounted screen it usually looks crowded. Art either side tends to work better.
How do you make a TV wall look good?
Surround the screen with art in matching frames, repeat some black or dark tones in the prints, and keep the whole arrangement in proportion with the media unit below.
What colour art goes with a black TV?
Prints with black, charcoal or deep colours in them, black and white art, and anything in black frames. Repeating the dark tone helps the screen blend in.
How far should art be from the TV?
About the same as the gaps between the prints, usually 5 to 8 cm, or a little more beside a very large screen. Equal spacing makes the TV look like part of the arrangement.
Is a gallery wall around a TV a good idea?
Yes. It is one of the best ways to hide a screen, because the TV becomes one dark shape among several. Use a shared colour or matching frames to keep it calm.
