Eclectic Gallery Wall Ideas
An eclectic gallery wall looks collected, not chaotic, when the subjects change but the style stays the same. Mix places, moods and colours, then tie them together with one shared design, a repeated palette and even 5 to 8 cm gaps.
Below is a ready-matched set of six retro travel posters, from Mt Fuji to Palm Springs, that looks like a lifetime of trips but shares one design style, with the layout, sizes and hanging steps.
The set: Alternating anchors and stacked pairs
About 141 cm wide in total with 5 cm gaps. Centre it above a long sofa or sideboard.

The colour palette
The set: six places, one retro style
Every poster in this set comes from the same retro travel series: bold sunsets and waves drawn in flat, grainy colour, with the place name set in the same quirky capitals on a cream panel. The places are all over the map, Japan, California, Mallorca and Mexico, which gives you the mismatched, well-travelled feel of an eclectic wall. The shared lettering and the repeated pink, apricot and teal are what stop it tipping into clutter.
The set suits colourful rooms, vintage furniture, rattan, plants and patterned rugs. It also brightens a plain white wall. See more in our travel posters and colourful wall art.
How to hang it
- Plan the rhythm. This layout alternates large and small: an A2, a stack of two A4 prints, another A2, then a second A4 stack. Lay it out on the floor first.
- Hang the first A2. Start at the left of the group, with the centre of the arrangement at 145 to 150 cm from the floor and 15 to 25 cm above the sofa or sideboard.
- Work left to right. Add each stack and the second A2, keeping about 5 cm between every frame. Two stacked A4 prints are almost the same height as an A2, so the top and bottom edges stay in line.
- Step back. The repeating big-small pattern should feel like a beat. If one colour bunches up, swap two of the A4 prints.

Eclectic gallery wall mistakes
- Nothing in common. Different subjects are fine, but you need one link, such as a shared style, palette or frame colour.
- Mixing frames and styles and colours all at once. If the frames are mismatched, keep the art from one series. If the art varies, match the frames.
- Ragged outer edges. Even a relaxed wall looks better when the outside edges line up roughly.
- Uneven gaps. Equal spacing is what makes a busy wall look intentional.
