Dark Academia Decor Ideas
Dark academia decor looks like an old university library: deep colours such as oxblood, forest green and walnut, shelves of books, worn leather, brass lamps and vintage art. Keep the lighting warm and layered, and choose art that feels old and well studied: botanical and bird plates, classical figures, old maps and moody landscapes.
Below: what dark academia style is, how to choose the art, ideas for bedrooms and living rooms, and how to keep a dark room from feeling gloomy.

The colour palette
What dark academia style is
Dark academia started online as an aesthetic inspired by old universities, classic novels and candlelit libraries, and has since become a popular interior style. The key traits:
- A deep palette. Oxblood, forest green, dark walnut and ochre, softened with parchment and cream.
- Books as decor. Full shelves, stacks on tables, a library wall if you have the space.
- Wood and leather. Dark wood furniture, leather chairs, tweed, plaid and velvet.
- Warm, low light. Brass lamps, green glass shades and candles.
- Vintage finds. Globes, busts, old frames, inkwells and second-hand pieces.
Choosing art for a dark academia room
Dark academia art should look as if it has been collected over years. Good choices:
- Vintage botanical and bird prints
- Classical figures, statues and ruins
- Old maps and scientific illustrations
- Moody landscapes and still life
- Quirky vintage-style animal portraits
Prints with dark grounds or aged parchment tones work best. Dark wood, black or antique gold frames finish the look. Avoid bright pop colours, neon and crisp minimal white, which break the old-library mood.
On a library wall, hang prints between and above the shelves, or build a tight salon-style cluster with even 5 to 8 cm gaps. Browse our vintage wall art, botanical prints, bird prints and burgundy wall art.
Dark academia bedroom and living room
Dark academia bedroom. Paint the walls forest green, oxblood or deep brown, add a dark wood bed, a plaid or wool throw, a brass reading lamp and a stack of books on the bedside table. Above the bed, choose one A1 above a double, or a pair of A2 prints above a king size, or a cluster of smaller vintage prints.
Dark academia living room. A leather sofa, full bookshelves and a wing chair by a lamp. Above the sofa, aim for art about two thirds its width, centred at 145 to 150 cm from the floor, and leave 15 to 25 cm between the sofa back and the frame.
Study corner. A pair of A3 prints above a desk, with a globe and a green-shaded lamp, is the simplest way to try the style.
How to stop a dark room feeling gloomy
- Layer warm light at different heights: a ceiling light, a floor lamp and one or two table lamps.
- Bring in parchment and cream through bedding, a rug and the art itself.
- Use mounts. A pale mount around a print lifts it off a dark wall.
- Add a mirror to bounce light, and choose a matte finish on the walls so they look soft rather than heavy.
