Small Gallery Wall Ideas
A small gallery wall needs fewer, closer prints: three or four matching A4 prints hung with about 5 cm between them, centred above a desk, console or chest of drawers. Matching sizes and one shared style stop a small wall from looking bitty.
Below is a ready-matched set of four Bauhaus prints in cream, mustard, orange and sage, with the exact layout, sizes and the mistakes to avoid on a smaller wall.
The set: Row of four
About 99 cm wide and 30 cm tall in total with 5 cm gaps. Centre it above a desk or console.

The colour palette
The set: four Bauhaus suns
These four prints share one graphic system: a single coloured circle set against fine black stripes, with BAUHAUS in clean capitals at the top and a date at the bottom, all on the same warm cream paper. The colours alternate along the row, mustard, sage, orange, sage, so your eye moves easily from one to the next.
Because each print is simple, four of them in A4 fill a small wall without crowding it. They suit a desk nook, a hallway console, a landing, a dorm room or the wall above a chest of drawers, and work with oak, walnut, white and black furniture. See more in our Bauhaus prints and small wall art.
How to hang a small gallery wall
- Measure the furniture. Keep the row a little narrower than the desk or console below it.
- Set the height. Hang the row 15 to 25 cm above the desk or console, or with its centre at 145 to 150 cm on a bare wall.
- Hang the two middle prints first, about 5 cm apart and centred on the furniture, then add one print at each end with the same gap.
- Level the tops. In a single row, a straight top line is what makes four small prints look like one piece.
Short on width? Hang the same four prints as a 2x2 grid instead. Try both in the gallery wall planner.
Small gallery wall mistakes
- Too many prints. On a small wall, three or four is plenty. More than that starts to look cluttered.
- Gaps that are too wide. Small prints need tight spacing to read as a group. Keep to about 5 cm.
- Mixing sizes. One large print and three tiny ones can overwhelm a narrow space. Matching sizes look calmer.
- No shared style. Prints from one series, like these, hold together even at a small size.
