Black and White Gallery Wall Ideas
A black and white gallery wall works when the prints share the same tone, not just the same lack of colour. Pick photographs with matching backgrounds and contrast, hang them in a tight grid with equal 5 to 8 cm gaps, and use one frame colour throughout.
Below is a ready-matched set of six wildlife photographs, all shot against deep black, with an exact grid layout, sizes and hanging steps.
The set: Grid of six (3x2)
About 99 cm wide and 89 cm tall in total with 5 cm gaps. Centre it above the sofa or bed.

The set: six wildlife portraits on black
Every print in this set is a black and white animal portrait lit against a black background, with a clean white border: a lion, an elephant and a leopard on the top row, a zebra, a giraffe and a lion in profile below. Because the backgrounds match, the six frames merge into one dark block, and the animals seem to step out of it.
The set suits grey, white or deep navy walls, leather or velvet sofas, and rooms with black metal or dark wood. Hang the lion in profile bottom right so it looks back into the group. Browse more in our photography prints and black and white wall art.
How to hang a black and white grid
- Mark the centre. Find the middle of the sofa, bed or sideboard and mark the wall so the centre of the whole grid sits at 145 to 150 cm from the floor.
- Hang the middle column first. Put the elephant on the top row and the giraffe directly below, leaving about 5 cm between them.
- Add the outer columns. Hang the remaining four prints about 5 cm either side, checking each row with a spirit level. In a grid, even small slips show, so measure every gap.
- Leave room above furniture. Keep 15 to 25 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom row.

Mistakes that spoil a monochrome wall
- Mixing warm and cool greys. A sepia photo next to a cold, blue-black one looks off. Keep the tones consistent, as this set does.
- Different frame colours. With no colour in the art, the frames show more. Choose all black, all white or all oak.
- Too many sizes. A grid of equal prints looks calm and graphic. Save mixed sizes for a looser wall.
- Uneven gaps. Equal spacing is what makes a grid look deliberate.
