Coastal Decor Ideas
Coastal decor is light, relaxed and natural: soft white walls, sand and driftwood tones, sea blues, linen and woven textures. Skip the anchors and slogans. Choose art that suggests the sea through colour and mood, such as soft seascapes, abstract waves and quiet shorelines.
Below: what coastal style is, how it differs from nautical, how to choose art that does not look cheesy, and ideas for each room.

What coastal style is
Coastal style grew out of relaxed seaside homes, where light, sand and salt air shaped simple, practical rooms. Today it is less about living by the sea and more about bringing that feeling inside:
- Light and air. Soft white or sand walls and plenty of daylight.
- Natural textures. Linen, cotton, rattan, jute, seagrass and pale or weathered wood.
- Colour from the sea. Soft blues, sea green and sand, with navy as a deeper accent.
- Relaxed furniture. Loose linen covers, woven chairs, simple wooden tables.
- Easy greenery. Olive trees, grasses and dried stems.
Coastal vs nautical: nautical style is themed, with navy and red stripes, anchors, rope and ships. Modern coastal is softer. It borrows the colours and textures of the beach rather than its objects, which is why it looks calmer and ages better.
Choosing coastal art that is not cheesy
The best coastal wall decor hints at the sea instead of spelling it out. Good choices:
- Painterly seascapes and beach scenes in soft blues and sand
- Abstract waves and horizon lines
- Shells, seaweed and sea botanicals in muted colours
- Vintage-style seaside travel posters and retro surf prints
Avoid slogan prints, literal anchors and life rings, lots of small themed objects together, and very bright turquoise, which can look like a holiday rental. Light oak, white or natural wood frames keep the look airy.
A matching set of three, like the kitchen above, is one of the easiest coastal looks to get right. Browse our beach wall art and ocean prints, or add depth with navy blue wall art.
Coastal living room, bedroom and kitchen
Coastal living room. A linen-covered sofa, a jute rug and a wooden coffee table. Above the sofa, aim for art about two thirds its width: one A1, a pair of A2 prints, or three A3 prints in a row with 5 to 8 cm gaps. Hang the centre at 145 to 150 cm from the floor.
Coastal bedroom. White or sand linen bedding, a soft blue throw and a rattan or pale wood headboard. Choose one A1 above a double, or a pair of A2 prints above a king size, in calm blues and sand so the room stays restful.
Kitchen and bathroom. A row of A3 or A4 prints above a counter or bath suits the style. In bathrooms, hang art away from direct splashes and keep the room well ventilated.
