Vintage Gallery Wall Ideas

A vintage gallery wall looks best when every print shares the same era, palette and finish, so the wall reads as one old collection rather than a jumble. Choose prints from one series, keep the frames warm (oak, walnut or antique brass), and hang them with even 5 to 8 cm gaps.

Below is a ready-matched set of six woodland prints styled as vintage textile exhibition posters, with the layout, sizes and hanging steps, plus the mistakes that make vintage walls look cluttered.

The set: six woodland exhibition posters

All six prints come from one series: a woodland animal set against dense, dark foliage, with a cream exhibition panel along the bottom. An owl and a pheasant are the two A2 anchors. A fawn, a rabbit, a fox and a dragonfly sit either side in A4, stacked in pairs.

Because every poster has the same cream panel and the same deep green background, the six read as a single antique collection. The palette of forest green, russet and parchment suits wood furniture, leather, brass lamps and darker paint colours. How to hang it

  1. Plan on the floor. Lay the six prints out in front of the furniture: two A4 prints stacked on the left, the two A2 anchors side by side, two A4 prints stacked on the right.
  2. Hang the anchors first. Centre the pair of A2 prints over the middle of the sofa or sideboard, about 5 cm apart, with the centre of the group at 145 to 150 cm from the floor.
  3. Add the stacks. Hang each A4 pair about 5 cm out from the anchors, with the same gap between the two prints in the stack. Two stacked A4 prints are almost exactly as tall as an A2, so the top and bottom edges line up.
  4. Check the spacing above furniture. Leave 15 to 25 cm between the top of the sofa or sideboard and the lowest frame.

Paper templates cut to each print size make this much easier. Try the arrangement first in our gallery wall planner.

Vintage gallery wall mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing too many eras. A Victorian botanical next to a 1970s travel poster next to a retro advert looks accidental. Pick one period and stay with it.
  • Bright white frames and mounts. They make old-style art look new. Warm wood, dark wood or antique brass suit vintage prints far better.
  • Uneven gaps. A vintage wall can feel full, but the spacing should still be regular. Keep every gap about the same.
  • Hanging too high. Keep the group close to the furniture so it feels anchored.

Questions people ask

What size prints work for a vintage gallery wall?
Use one or two A2 prints as anchors and build around them with A4 or A3 prints. Two stacked A4 prints match the height of an A2, which keeps the outline of the group neat.
What is the rule for gallery walls?
Keep the whole arrangement about two thirds the width of the furniture below it, leave 15 to 25 cm above the furniture, and keep the gaps between frames equal, usually 5 to 8 cm.
What is the best layout for a vintage gallery wall?
A symmetrical layout with large anchors in the middle and smaller prints stacked either side is the easiest to get right. A looser salon hang also suits vintage art, as long as the colours stay consistent.
How far apart should frames be on a gallery wall?
5 to 8 cm between frames works for most walls. Equal gaps matter more than the exact number.
Do frames on a vintage gallery wall need to match?
Not exactly, but they should feel related. Warm wood, dark walnut and antique brass all mix well. Avoid bright white or glossy black frames next to old-style prints.
What are common gallery wall mistakes?
Hanging too high, uneven gaps, too many tiny prints and no shared colour. With vintage art, mixing too many eras is the most common problem.
Are gallery walls out of style in 2026?
No. Gallery walls with a clear theme and palette, such as a set of vintage exhibition posters, remain a popular way to fill a large wall.
