Inspired by Kelly, not sold as Kelly

Everything in this collection is designed and printed by Laboo Studio. These are not Ellsworth Kelly works, reproductions or authorised editions: his prints and paintings sit with his estate and in museums such as MoMA, the Met and the Guggenheim, and they are not sold here. What these designs borrow is the approach - colour as the whole subject, shape reduced until nothing is left to remove.

What makes the style work on a wall

Kelly took his shapes from the world rather than from geometry: the curve of a shadow on a stair, the gap between two buildings, the outline of a leaf. That is why hard-edge work of this kind never feels mechanical, and why a single colour block can hold a whole wall without any detail to study.

It suits rooms with clean lines and plain paint. One large print above a sideboard or a desk does more than a grouping, because the shape needs uninterrupted space around it to read. If you do hang a pair, keep them in the same palette and leave a generous gap - the white between the frames becomes part of the composition.

Colour, and where it lands

Orange and red bring warmth to a north-facing room. Blue and green hold up under strong daylight and calm a busy space. Black on white is the most forgiving of all and works in almost any room, which is why it is the usual starting point for an office or a studio, where geometric prints read as considered rather than decorative.

Flat colour rewards scale, so the larger formats usually read better. Mark the outside dimensions on your wall with paper or removable tape before ordering and view it from where you usually sit.
