A square print does something a portrait or landscape one cannot: it sits in the middle of a wall without implying a direction. Nothing leads the eye left or up. That makes square wall art the easiest format to hang on its own, and the most forgiving in a grid.
Why the format works
Square art prints suit walls where you have height and width in equal measure - above a bedside table, between two windows, in a stairwell landing, or centred over a low sideboard. They also solve the awkward wall: the narrow strip beside a door, where a square reads as deliberate and a portrait print reads as squeezed.
Composition changes too. Square posters tend to be built around a centre rather than a horizon, so subjects that radiate - a sun, a moon, a flower head, a spiral - sit naturally in them.
Hanging one, or hanging nine
On its own, centre a square print at eye level and give it more clear wall than you would a rectangle; the format needs space to read as a square rather than as a gap. Over furniture, aim for the artwork to be roughly two thirds the width of the piece below it.
In a grid, squares are the only format that tiles perfectly. A 2 × 2 of the same size reads as one large artwork; a 3 × 3 becomes a feature wall. Keep the gaps identical - 5cm for smaller prints, 8 to 10cm for larger - and measure from the frame edges, not the images.
Sizes
These come in true squares: 25 × 25cm, 30 × 30cm, 35 × 35cm and 40 × 40cm among others, so check the sizes on each product. Mark the outside dimensions on your wall with paper or removable tape before ordering and view it from where you usually sit.
