Burgundy Bedroom Ideas
Burgundy gives a bedroom warmth and a sense of luxury, and it is easiest to live with when you pair it with a soft partner such as blush or cream and use it in measured doses: one wall, a velvet headboard, a throw and a print. Brass and warm wood finish the look.
Below: colours that go with burgundy, oxblood versus wine tones, the burgundy and blush look, and how to choose art for burgundy walls.

The colour palette
Colours that go with burgundy in a bedroom
- Blush and dusty pink are the gentlest partners. Burgundy and blush together feel romantic but grown-up.
- Cream and ivory lift burgundy and keep the room restful.
- Mustard and gold bring out its warmth. Brass lamps and gold frames look rich against it.
- Forest green is the complementary colour. Green sits opposite red on the colour wheel, so a deep green throw or plant makes burgundy sing.
- Navy and charcoal give a moodier, more tailored look.
To keep the balance, try the 60-30-10 rule: about 60% cream or blush, 30% wood and a supporting colour, and 10% burgundy. Or flip it and paint the walls burgundy, with cream bedding as the 30%.
Burgundy, oxblood or wine?
Deep reds lean warm or cool. Oxblood and brick-tinged burgundy have more brown in them. They feel earthy and suit walnut, leather, camel and mustard. Wine and berry burgundy have a touch of purple or blue. They suit grey, navy, silver and blush.
Look at your burgundy next to a white sheet of paper. If it looks brown, go for warmer partners. If it looks purple, go for cooler ones. Art that leans the same way will look like it belongs.
Headboards, bedding and the burgundy and blush look
- Blush walls, burgundy accents: paint the walls a soft pink and bring in burgundy through a throw, cushions and a print. This is the easiest way to try the colour.
- Velvet headboard: a burgundy or oxblood velvet headboard against cream walls is a single confident statement.
- Burgundy walls: deep red walls feel cocooning. Keep the bedding cream or blush and add two warm lamps.
- Metals: brass and antique gold suit every version of burgundy.
Choosing wall art for burgundy walls
On burgundy walls, prints with cream or blush backgrounds stand out clearly, and touches of gold or forest green look rich. Bold florals, abstract shapes in oxblood and pink, and leaves in burgundy and green all suit the colour. On pale walls with burgundy accents, a print with plenty of deep red ties the scheme together.
Above the bed, aim for art about two thirds the width of the headboard: one A1 above a double, or a pair of A2 prints above a king size. Hang the bottom of the frame 15 to 25 cm above the headboard.
